DCCPS Partners with China CDC on Folate Exposure Study

A follow-up study (the Chinese Children and Families Cohort Study [CFCS]) of a cohort that began in the 1990s involves collaboration among NCI's Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (Drs. Nancy Potischman, David Berrigan, and Joseph Su), Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (Drs. Martha Linet, Cari Kitahara and Joshua Sampson), Division of Cancer Prevention (Dr. Kevin Dodd) and Center for Global Health (Dr. Ann Chao), the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (Dr. Regan Bailey), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Dr. RJ Berry), the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC), and Queensland University of TechnologyExternal Web Site Policy. The cohort includes women who did or did not take folic acid supplements during pregnancy, and their children. The original study found significantly fewer birth defects for the folate group.

The follow-up study's ultimate goal is for the data it generates to serve as a research resource for the extramural research community regarding the early origins of chronic diseases, including adult cancers. Specific objectives examine the relation of folic acid exposure in utero to childhood cancer incidence and biological and other risk factors for adult cancers.

Recent activities of this research effort have included a meeting in December, 2013 to report on progress, discuss data management processes, and continue planning analyses of the pilot data for forthcoming scientific publications. The next meeting, which took place in June, 2014 at NCI with the Nutrition Institute staff from the China CDC, focused on the dietary and physical activity data and publications. Collaborators from the China CDC also are working on the childhood cancer study.

The NCI staff working on this initiative have been acknowledged for their efforts to conduct high quality epidemiologic research, provide training to build cancer research capacity, and foster collaborations with Chinese scientists.
