How are CHIS cancer control data being used?

California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) cancer control data are an important source of information for cancer control researchers. The key advantages of CHIS are:

  • data collection from 44 geographic areas that represent 41 individual countiesExternal Web Site Policy and three groupings of counties with smaller populations;
  • racial and ethnic diversity of the California population; and
  • large samples of Asian-Americans, Pacific Islanders, American Indians and Alaska Natives, and Hispanics and Latinos.

These advantages mean that CHIS can facilitate small area estimation and in-depth examinations of specific population groups that had insufficient numbers for analysis in other surveys such as the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The county-specific population estimates allow researchers to conduct ecologic analysis at the county level (or sub-county level in the case of heavily populated areas).
